The English-Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the integration of reading,
writing, spelling, listening, and speaking skills.
Reading Skills:
- Phonemic awareness, letter/sound relationship
- Blend sounds to make words
- Recognize consonants and vowels
- Develop print awareness-concept of letter, word, sentence, paragraph
- Identify parts of a book and their functions
- Understand author's purpose, draw conclusions, generalize
- Distinguish realism/fantasy or fact/non-fact/fantasy

Writing:
- Develop skill in gross and fine motor functioning and hand/eye
coordination
- Gain increasing control of penmanship (proper posture, paper position, and
grip)
- Write letters of the alphabet, upper and lower case
- Write numerals 0 through 10 correctly
- Write words and sentences with proper spacing between letters in a word
and words in a sentence
- Capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives)
- Write notes, captions, messages that move left to right on a line, top to
bottom on a page
Spelling:
- Phonograms (word families)
- Vowels (short, long, digraphs, diphthongs)
- Consonants (single, double, digraphs, silent)
Listening:
- Show an interest in and respond to text read aloud
- Expand vocabulary by listening
- Listen for various purposes
- Understand and retell spoken messages
- Respond appropriately to questions, directions, etc.
Speaking:
- Expand vocabulary by speaking
- Participate in rhymes and songs
- Participate in conversations and discussions
