English-Language Arts

The English-Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the integration of reading, writing, spelling, listening, and speaking skills.

Reading Skills:

  • Phonemic awareness, letter/sound relationship
  • Blend sounds to make words
  • Recognize consonants and vowels
  • Develop print awareness-concept of letter, word, sentence, paragraph
  • Identify parts of a book and their functions
  • Understand author's purpose, draw conclusions, generalize
  • Distinguish realism/fantasy or fact/non-fact/fantasy
  • Identify sequence of events
  • Recognize story elements (character, plot, setting, theme)
  • Compare and contrast
  • Recognize cause and effect
  • Summarize and analyze

Writing:

  • Develop skill in gross and fine motor functioning and hand/eye coordination
  • Gain increasing control of penmanship (proper posture, paper position, and grip)
  • Write letters of the alphabet, upper and lower case
  • Write numerals 0 through 10 correctly
  • Write words and sentences with proper spacing between letters in a word and words in a sentence
  • Capitalization, punctuation, parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives)
  • Write notes, captions, messages that move left to right on a line, top to bottom on a page

Spelling:

  • Phonograms (word families)
  • Vowels (short, long, digraphs, diphthongs)
  • Consonants (single, double, digraphs, silent)

Listening:

  • Show an interest in and respond to text read aloud
  • Expand vocabulary by listening
  • Listen for various purposes
  • Understand and retell spoken messages
  • Respond appropriately to questions, directions, etc.

Speaking:

  • Expand vocabulary by speaking
  • Participate in rhymes and songs
  • Participate in conversations and discussions
  • Speak to a group in an appropriate way

History-Social Studies

Developing social skills and responsibilities.
