A child who is 48 to 60 months of age typically demonstrates a large increase in vocabulary and physical abilities.  Students enrolled in our K-4 program are exposed to a wide range of activities during the school year.  Students participate in classroom activities as well as religion class, physical education, music, computer lab, and library resource.

The following skills are taught and should be mastered by completion of the K-4 year.

Self-reliance Skills:

  • Go to the bathroom alone
  • Learning to dress oneself

Practical Skills:

  • Say first and last name
  • Know my age
  • Know some colors
  • Recognize/point to body parts

Social/Emotional Skills:

  • Accepts and responds to teacher's authority
  • Respect and show concern for people and things around me
  • Play and share cooperatively with other children
  • Have a good self image
  • Have appropriate control over my feelings

Work Habits:

  • Follow routines independently
  • Can follow directions
  • Can work well in small groups
  • Does not disturb classmates while they work
  • Seeks only my share of the teacher's attention

Gross Motor Skills:

  • Walk up/down stairs (alternating feet)
  • Walk (forward and backward)
  • Run
  • Jump in place (two feet together)
  • Balance (left foot, right foot)
  • Hop (one foot, two feet)
  • Throw a large ball forward
  • Catch a large ball
  • Do a forward somersault
  • Gallop

Fine Motor Skills:  (use small muscles in)

  • Know some position orientation words

Listening Skills:

  • Listen quietly/lengthening attention span
  • Respond to a story by answering questions (comprehension)

Speaking Skills:

  • Speak clearly
  • Communicate in sentences
  • Expanding vocabulary
  • Wait for turn when speaking in a group

Math Readiness:

  • Can rote count to 20
  • Recognize some numbers
  • Recognize some shapes
  • Find shapes in environment
  • Can identify size differences
  • Can sequence different sizes
  • Can categorize objects
