English-Language Arts

The English-Language Arts curriculum is literature based.  It emphasizes the integration of reading, writing, spelling, listening and speaking.

Reading Skills:

  • Sequencing, generalizing, making judgments, recognizing author's purpose, fact and opinion, drawing conclusions, visualization, imagery

  • Identifying parts of a book, plot, character, setting, theme, text structure, summarization

  • Compare and contrast, recognize main idea and supporting details, predicting

  • Narrative writing, research process, encyclopedia

Writing/Language:

  • D'Nealian cursive handwriting

  • Punctuation and spelling

  • Sentence structure and paragraph structure

  • Showing clarity of thought through journal writing, creative writing, and report writing

  • Writing sentences (compound sentences, compound subjects and predicates, run-on sentences)

  • Identifying subject and predicates

  • Nouns (singular/plural, common/proper, possessive, direct objects, indirect objects)

  • Verbs (main verbs, helping verbs, verb tense, irregular verbs)

  • Pronouns (possessive pronouns, contractions, homophones)

  • Adjectives and adverbs

  • Prepositions

  • Gerunds and Participles

  • Research paper with bibliography of sources-two

Spelling:

  • Weekly lists

  • Above level bonus words

  • Weekly spelling words are reinforced with the Orchard Program during Computer class

Listening:

  • Listen attentively

  • Use listening skills to recall main ideas, significant details, compare and contrast ideas, and arrive at conclusions

Speaking:

  • Reading aloud to the class

  • Poster presentations

  • Oral reports
